Senior Counsel – Music Licensing

As Senior Counsel at Spotify you will partner with and provide legal guidance to our Business Affairs and Business Development teams with a particular focus on securing publishing rights for Spotify content and enabling distribution of Spotify both in the US and internationally. Our deals are often groundbreaking, revolutionary and always evolving so it will be up to you to continuously assess and advise the teams on legal issues using a creative and pragmatic approach. 


What You’ll Do


  • Review, draft and advise our business teams on a wide range of commercial agreements with a focus on content licensing deals with publishers and collective rights management organisations across the Americas and internationally
  • Collaborate with our accounting, finance and operations teams on the drafting and implementation of content licensing agreements
  • Advise on licensing issues that impact Spotify’s product development and growth
  • Work closely with our business teams to summarise and communicate legal concepts clearly and help them synthesise legal and regulatory frameworks in developing their business strategies
  • Advise our teams on understanding legal concepts, issues and risks, complex agreement structures, approval processes, and company policies and procedures

    Who You Are


  • J.D., LLM (or equivalent), with admission to at least one bar (or qualification for registered in-house counsel in NY)
  • 6+years of relevant law firm and/or in-house transactional experience
  • Strong working knowledge and experience of US and/or international copyright law and legal issues relating to music publishing and label licensing, collective rights management, IP, media and digital products
  • Experience partnering with global collaborators both within the legal team and working with external counsel
  • Self-motivated with the ability to identify and attack work to be done without being instructed
  • Ability to be nimble and work in a fast-paced environment with changing needs and demanding timelines
  • Willingness to get your hands dirty and dig in on the details of projects and work well as part of a team – both with other lawyers and non-legal partners
  • Have a practical, business-oriented approach to problem-solving and be able to effectively counsel business teams by providing pragmatic, commercial and timely advice

  • Hybrid role based in our New York offices (2 to 3 days a week required)
