Senior Director and Associate General Counsel, Employment and Litigation

The mission of the legal department at Databricks is to help scale the business overall while ensuring governance and compliance, contributing to customer and corporate security and corporate risk management and mitigation. The Senior Director, Employment & Litigation will support our Human Resources and business partners on employment law matters in Databricks's offices as assigned including North America and other global locations as assigned, providing, risk-weighted advice on a broad range of employment, litigation and related compliance matters. You will also support non-employment litigation and help oversee third-party claims affecting Databricks's global business.

You will lead and handle the latest and complex legal projects and matters. You should excel in an environment that requires you to and organizational needs. Also, you must and be comfortable working collaboratively within the legal team and across other teams and with external stakeholders.


  • Manage a team of attorneys and other legal professionals to advise Databricks Human Resources and business partners on employment-law related matters for Databricks on a global basis, including hiring, performance management, terminations, discrimination, harassment, accommodations, leaves of absence, wage and hour issues, incentive compensation, employee investigations, restructuring plans and corporate development (M&A) activity
  • Monitor new laws, regulations and decisions affecting the substantive legal areas above and provide strategic advice to company leadership
  • Oversee the drafting and negotiation of offer letters and employment-related agreements, including severance, separation, restrictive covenant, retention, and other employment-related agreements; draft employee-facing policies, handbooks, and other resources
  • Help lead training events on employment law, litigation, and compliance related matters
  • Manage responses to pre litigation filing demands, including investigating claims, communicating with opposing counsel and negotiating resolutions
  • Draft and review pre-litigation and litigation documents, including correspondence with opposing counsel, pleadings, and mediation/arbitration statements
  • Manage outside counsel handling both employment and non-employment litigation, including management of budgets, directing litigation strategy, and reviewing pleadings and other documents
  • Support employment-related aspects of mergers, acquisitions, strategic investments, and divestitures, including due diligence and related integration efforts
  • Advice and counsel will be both on daily issues and strategic and systemic plans
  • Respond to attorney demand letters and agency matters, including government-initiated inquiries and audits
  • Support Legal department and team related projects, as assigned

Qualifications & Experience

  • JD from an accredited institution
  • 15+ years employment law experience; in-house experience required
  • Fluency translating legal advice into practical, risk adjusted, business-oriented advice
  • Experience supporting international business operations and partnering with HR and other professionals across multiple regions, in the APJ region
  • Strong work ethic and the highest level of integrity and business ethics
  • Ability to build strong relationships quickly and work with all levels of HR and the business with ease
  • Great judgment, attention to detail, interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills, with demonstrated teaming ability to work well with, influence, and inform diverse groups, including HR, legal and other internal clients
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with cloud and software industries, including SaaS model
  • A desire to work on complex legal issues and in new global regions as we continue to expand
  • Experience working with a client-service focus
  • Assess quickly latest situations and develop practical options to respond to and resolve risks, in a way that displays legal knowledge
