As our value grows, so does our need for extraordinary people. Technical Writers at Checkout.com help build the next generation of financial products and online payment solutions through clear, consistent, quality technical content.

Reporting directly to the Head of Content Design, you’ll work with our growing team of technical writers and lead on a rich variety of projects (like contributing to the strategy for the future of Checkout.com – Docs). You’ll liaise with other writers (both creative and UX), designers, marketers, and stakeholders of varying seniority at the intersection of diverse functions including Design, Product, User Research and Engineering.

You’re an experienced leader on Technical Writing projects, identifying approaches to the work and how to execute them. You can balance the ongoing needs of the business against its longer term goals. You’ll also have experience working on technical product content and API or SDK references, adhering to a consistent style. You’ll be a confident and sympathetic editor with strong experience in managing stakeholders. You’ll have a keen interest in technology and the role that well-written content plays in facilitating successful product integrations. You’ll have a strong understanding of Git and the Docs-as-Code approach, and knowledge of the OpenAPI (OAS) specification.

The team

We are over 40 people across Brand Design, Product Design, UX Research, Content Design and Design Operations. We operate in a hybrid working model, with two days in the office per week.

 

About you:

  • You can show and tell us how you’ve helped the people around you get better
  •  

    We’d like to see:

     

  • Experience in online payments and/or in a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business
  • Knowledge of API testing and familiarity with a CLI
  • Ability to read code in at least one programming language
  • Experience of using analytics and user research to inform your decisions
  • A strong understanding of Git and the Docs-as-Code approach and knowledge of the OpenAPI (OAS) specification.

    The first 6 months:

     

  • Month 1 –  you’re familiar with the main documentation repository structure and are comfortable fixing minor issues across documentation pages. You’ve also met with members from across the product teams and have built a foundational understanding of Checkout’s various products and services. You understand technical docs role in the business, the vision and roadmap.
  • Month 2 –  you’re familiar with the API reference repository structure and can comfortably make changes to API pages. You’re also regularly picking up new work from our team’s project board and have begun tackling more complex projects already scoped by other members of the team.
  • Months 3 and 4 – you’re beginning to independently research and document new feature ships. You’re also regularly reviewing contributions to the documentation from other writers and other internal contributors. You’re defining strategy and activities to support the product goals, and scoping projects.
  • Month 5 – you’re noticeably more comfortable discussing Checkout’s products and advocating for our users. You’ve established a good rapport with the team and external stakeholders, and others are comfortable coming to you for support and direction.
  • Month 6 – you’re regularly picking up new work from our team’s project board and volunteering to review the work of other writers. You’re recognised by others as expert in your domain and support for the team and the wider business.
